Authorities in the United Kingdom have apprehended several individuals under the ‘Explosives Act’ near a US airbase in southwest England. The arrests occurred two miles from RAF Fairford, a base hosting US Air Force equipment, recently involved in operations related to the conflict in Iran.
In a statement, Gloucestershire Police reported evacuation procedures in Whelford following the declaration of a major incident due to these arrests. Armed police established a cordon near RAF Fairford, which serves as a strategic base for US military operations.
“The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team are currently examining a number of vehicles,” police stated, withholding the identities and number of suspects arrested.
Defense Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the incident on X, assuring it is “being dealt with.” The local government emphasized gratitude towards emergency services for swift action.
Further remarks were withheld by the UK Defense Ministry pending ongoing investigations, though they reassured public safety and the Prime Minister’s continuous updates on the situation.
Recent tensions have increased, particularly after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps labeled RAF Fairford a “legitimate target.” US Air Force operations from Fairford have contested Iranian military positions, prompting retaliatory declarations.
This incident follows cyber-related disruptions, such as Iranian-linked cyberattacks on UK infrastructure and community water systems in Minnesota. UK shutdowns linked to these attacks impacted power generators temporarily. Relevant federal alerts have identified similar threat vectors, potentially disrupting operations and incurring financial damages.
Efforts to deter further threats continue, as the UK supports US defense initiatives through strategic base approvals like RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for operations against Iranian missile sites.
