Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, greeted Britain’s Prime Minister Andy Burnham on his arrival at Horodetskyi House in Kyiv for a bilateral meeting. Burnham announced the UK’s decision to assist Ukraine in manufacturing its own long-range missiles by providing classified technical information for British components.
Missile Technology Exchange
On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Burnham stated that MBDA, a defense firm, would share details on UK-made parts of the SCALP missile. This action aims to enable Ukraine to produce the weapons locally. However, experts caution that operational missiles are unlikely to be ready soon, raising questions about addressing Ukraine’s urgent needs in its conflict with Russia.
Understanding the SCALP Missile
The SCALP missile is a high-precision, air-launched missile with a range of more than 250 kilometers. It is the French version of the UK’s Storm Shadow and both utilize shared technology. Designed to target fixed installations like bunkers, the missile is difficult to detect and uses an advanced navigation system. It has been employed by military forces in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. The British, French, and Italian air forces, among others, use these missiles.
Production Timeline and Challenges
Ukraine is currently discussing with France the establishment of assembly lines within the country for missile production. Details on these plans are unclear. Douglas Barrie, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, noted that the impact of the missiles depends on the speed of production and deployment.
Arun Dawson from the Freeman Air and Space Institute at King’s College London mentioned that the new missile capabilities would not influence the current winter season and may not be operational until next year.
Ukraine’s Defense Needs
Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine is receiving fewer Patriot defense systems, while Russian ballistic attacks are increasing. This shortage is critical as the United States and European allies struggle to boost production.
SCALP missiles could provide Ukraine with deep strike capabilities, targeting locations used by Russia to launch ballistic missiles. Matthew Savill from London’s Royal United Services Institute emphasized that these missiles can penetrate hard structures, which drones currently cannot achieve.
International Reaction
Russia criticized the UK’s announcement, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accusing the UK’s actions of intensifying the conflict. Burnham responded, questioning the origins of hostilities.
Ongoing UK Support
Since 2023, the UK has supplied Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles, enabling strikes on Russian-controlled areas. In addition to missile support, the UK is aiding Ukraine in developing alternative strike systems capable of attacking targets over 500 kilometers away, equipped with powerful warheads.
