Ukrainian Basketball Player Kate Koval Leaves LSU Due to Russian Player Signing
Kate Koval, a Ukrainian forward, made a public announcement about her departure from LSU’s women’s basketball program on social media due to the signing of a Russian player. Koval expressed that the situation had a profound personal impact, affecting her family and friends living amidst the war in Ukraine.
Koval said, “The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me. This decision has not been easy. While I understand and respect that roster decisions are a part of college basketball, I have to remain true to myself, my values and my country.”
LSU coach Kim Mulkey had previously announced Koval’s departure citing “personal reasons” after her season in Baton Rouge. It was understood that Koval left in protest of LSU signing Russian center Anna Minaeva, who has a background in professional play with MBA Moscow.
Koval expressed pride in her father’s service in the Ukrainian military, defending the country against the ongoing conflict with Russia. “My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” wrote Koval, emphasizing the war’s personal significance due to losses of loved ones and destruction of familiar places by missile strikes.
Despite her enjoyment of Baton Rouge, Koval clarified that the inclusion of a Russian player created an untenable environment. She stated she was unaware of Minaeva’s addition until after the transfer portal closed, potentially impacting her eligibility for the upcoming 2026-27 season unless exceptional action from the NCAA was taken.
She expressed hope for NCAA consideration of her unique circumstances, wishing to continue her basketball career at another college during the 2026-27 season. No immediate comments from NCAA and LSU representatives were available as of Wednesday night.
Koval had transferred to LSU from Notre Dame, participated in all 35 games during her season at LSU, with 17 starts, averaging noteworthy statistics, including 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks in an average 16.6 minutes per game. The team’s journey was cut short in the Sweet 16 with a loss to Duke.
