Introduction to SuperAgers
Some individuals in their 80s and 90s maintain a memory sharpness comparable to adults decades younger. Researchers have long been intrigued by these so-called “SuperAgers” and the factors behind their impressive cognition. A recent study by the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center at the University of Chicago and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) aimed to uncover more about these phenomenon.
The study, published in Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy, suggests that extraordinary memory in the elderly isn’t merely due to dodging Alzheimer’s genetic risk factors. Despite the assumption that such individuals might just possess a genetic advantage, the study indicates otherwise.
Key Findings of the Study
The research involved 231 adults aged 80 or older, with 142 classified as SuperAgers and 89 as healthy controls with average memory for their age. SuperAgers exhibited memory abilities on par with or superior to individuals in their 50s and 60s.
The researchers examined the APOE gene, closely linked to Alzheimer’s risk, alongside three polygenic risk scores. Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider, an internal medicine physician, noted these scores combine various genetic variants.
The results showed similar Alzheimer’s-related APOE variants across both groups. No genetic risk scores could forecast SuperAgers. The examination of genetic ancestry and rare variants known to protect against Alzheimer’s also revealed no substantial differences between the groups.
Genes and Beyond
Low genetic risk might help some avoid dementia, but it doesn’t fully account for the exceptional memory in others. Study co-first author Ana Capuano highlighted a broader perspective on brain health, reinforcing that cognitive well-being involves more than minimizing Alzheimer’s risk alone.
Other research indicates variance in brain structure, brain cells, and tau protein levels across SuperAgers. Lifestyle factors, including education, exercise, mental engagement, and social connections, may also contribute to these differences, even among those with genetic risks.
Study Limitations and Future Directions
Dr. Ungerleider pointed out the limitations of the study, noting its relatively small size and focus on a single time point. Additionally, it didn’t account for lifestyle, behavior, or blood vessel health, possibly overlooking minor genetic impacts.
Further research will integrate cognitive testing with various assessments, seeking to reveal what sustains memory in later years. This study underlines a positive message: memory decline isn’t inevitable, and maintaining a youthful memory is achievable for some individuals well into their later years.
