Real Madrid announced surprise elections after confirming a contest for the presidency between Florentino Perez and Enrique Riquelme, a renewable energy entrepreneur. Real Madrid’s statutes require the club’s approximately 100,000 socio members to vote within the next two weeks.
Though Perez is favored to retain his position, his intention to reappoint Jose Mourinho as coach is temporarily paused. Until recently, no signs pointed to imminent elections, as Perez’s term had four years left. However, discontent over the lackluster 2025-26 season arose. Perez’s standing seemed solid despite this.
A turning point came with Perez’s unusual press conference on May 12. He mentioned unnamed conspirators working against him, inviting challengers to step forward. Without specifying names, Perez referred to someone “with a Mexican accent” linked to electricity companies, implying Riquelme.
Riquelme, founder of Cox Energy, has connections to Mexico. A day after Perez’s conference, Riquelme expressed interest in the presidency through an open letter in Marca, advocating for a more transparent election process. Current rules set by Perez require candidates to be Spanish citizens, club members for 20 years, and to submit a bank guarantee of 15% of the club’s annual budget.
Last Thursday, Real Madrid formally called for elections, giving candidates ten days to declare their candidacy. Riquelme accepted the rules, despite tight deadlines, and started organizing his campaign. Securing the required personal deposit of €187 million was reportedly not a concern for Riquelme.
Riquelme’s business career began as a teenager. At 21, he moved to Central America and later established Cox Energy in 2014, expanding solar projects globally. Earlier this year, Cox bought the Mexican business of Iberdrola for $4 billion.
’20 years of membership’, another requirement for candidacy, is also not an issue, as Riquelme’s father served as a club director from 2006 to 2009. This indicates long-standing ties to the club. Recently, Riquelme has been visible in Spain and expressed urgency to proceed due to concerns about Perez’s plan to sell part of the club to private investors.
During a recent event, Riquelme mentioned that they had a strategy for the 2028 elections but were forced to act immediately. He has connections with Bernabeu figures, gaining support outside Perez’s circle. Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas and tennis star Rafael Nadal are among his associates.
Despite potential support, some think Riquelme lacks time to mount a convincing campaign with the necessary support. Madrid’s VIP circles see Riquelme’s move as preparation for future opportunities beyond Perez’s leadership.
As elections loom, Madrid’s statutes decree the election must conclude by June 8. The contest between Perez and Riquelme remains uncertain, with Perez’s plan for Mourinho’s return in limbo. Some believe this process will temporarily strengthen Perez’s control amid internal controversies.
