Unique Solar Eclipse Opportunities and Observations

Astronomers note that regions such as Iceland, Greenland, northern Russia, Spain, and a portion of Portugal will experience a total eclipse. During a total eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s face. NASA reports that northern parts of the United States, from Alaska to North Carolina, will observe a partial solar eclipse. For a partial eclipse, the alignment is not perfect, causing the Sun to appear as a crescent.
In Washington, D.C., the partial eclipse will start around 1:17 p.m. ET with 4% of the Sun obscured. In Reykjavík, Iceland, the total eclipse will commence at 5:48 p.m. local time. In León, Spain, totality begins at 8:28 p.m. and will last for two minutes. The European Space Agency highlights that this is the first solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905.
Safety is crucial for those planning to watch these celestial events. Special equipment, such as eclipse glasses or handheld viewers with filters, is necessary. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns regular sunglasses are ineffective and viewing the Sun directly can cause severe eye damage, including burns or permanent vision loss.
Beyond public observation, the eclipse offers a scientific opportunity. NASA plans to deploy scientific balloons and a high-altitude jet to study atmospheric effects during the eclipse. According to Kelly Korreck, NASA’s eclipse program manager, the event allows scientists to examine the Sun’s corona in ways not possible elsewhere in the solar system.
The next partial solar eclipse reachable from parts of the U.S. will occur on August 2, 2027, with totality visible from Spain, the Middle East, and North Africa. On August 23, 2044, a total solar eclipse will be visible across parts of the contiguous U.S.
