Update on Shooting Incident Involving Eric Bieniemy’s Family

Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of intensive care following a shooting in their Northern Virginia home. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided this update during a press conference on Wednesday.

Mia, 57, is reportedly making steady improvement after being shot by their adult son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, on Sunday night in Ashburn, Virginia. Reid, without prompting, shared her progress while discussing his team’s injuries at the Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri.

“She’s doing great. She’s doing better and great from where she was, out of the ICU unit and making progress,” Reid stated. “So, we’re happy about that. EB (Eric Bieniemy) is still with her and that part’s important that that stays in place.”

Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was arrested on suspicion of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, as reported by the sheriff’s office. No motive for the shooting has been identified, only being described as a domestic disturbance.

Dramatic footage captured law enforcement’s response, revealing a chaotic scene at the Bieniemy residence. Deputies evacuated Mia Bieniemy while other agents, weapons drawn, approached the house on Northpark Drive where Elijah was apprehended.

Mia Bieniemy was able to call 911 herself, according to Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. A criminal complaint disclosed that a .22-caliber Ruger was used, with the projectile injuring her left forearm, shoulder, and traveling across her chest.

Elijah Bieniemy is currently held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, awaiting his next court date on Aug. 31.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, remains with his wife. He is known for his prominent role coordinating the Kansas City offense, which features players like quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce. The timing of his return to the Chiefs remains uncertain, with the team’s exhibition season beginning on Aug. 15 and the regular season on Sept. 14.

“We stay in touch with him, keep him abreast of everything that’s going on,” Reid mentioned. “He’s got the practice session tape, watching whatever spare time he’s got there.”

Representatives from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Public Defender have not commented further on the case.
