USC Trojans Suspend Linebacker for Dangerous Hit
The USC Trojans have suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following his dangerous late hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. The incident occurred during the second quarter of the Ducks’ 41-20 victory over the Trojans.
Moore was in the process of sliding to avoid a tackle after gaining sufficient yardage for a first down when Stephens delivered a late hit directly to his head. The clash led to the ejection of Stephens from the game due to targeting, with Moore being stretchered off the field.
“Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character,” USC head coach Lincoln Riley stated. “He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions and will learn from this.”
The hit sparked immediate reactions, with Stephens pushed by Moore’s teammates and seen celebrating his action. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning condemned the play, referring to it as “disgusting.” Team members included Oregon wide receiver Evan Stewart, who checked on Moore as he was carted off.
In a statement, Stephens expressed remorse for his behavior:
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game,” he said. “Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable. Regardless of what was going through my mind at the time, there is no justification for smiling or celebrating while another player receives medical attention.”
Stephens accepted full responsibility and expressed hopes for Moore’s quick recovery. He emphasized his actions do not reflect the values of USC or its football program.
The suspension means Stephens will miss the upcoming game against Washington.
