Videos and images circulating on social media have shown large groups of U.S. sailors arriving in Pattaya, Thailand. Known as ‘Sin City,’ Pattaya welcomed the crew from the USS Abraham Lincoln, who had been at sea for 286 days. This lengthy deployment had sparked concerns about food shortages and mental health challenges, which President Donald Trump dismissed.
The USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed in November 2025, participated in the U.S. naval blockade and combat operations during the Iran war. The carrier group arrived in Chon Buri province for a five-day rest period alongside other U.S. Navy ships like the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and USS Robert Smalls.
Pattaya officials met with Navy representatives to establish behavior guidelines for the sailors. Pattaya, historically known for sex tourism, is now marketed as a family-friendly destination offering activities like golf, water skiing, and skydiving. The USS Lincoln’s commanding officer emphasized rules against using prostitutes, reminding service members that violations under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice could lead to severe penalties.
The city greeted U.S. personnel with welcoming banners, leading many to explore Pattaya’s attractions, including the famed Walking Street. Buses brought more personnel from the Lincoln, which docked at Laem Chabang.
Social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, showed sailors enjoying their time in Pattaya. Comments from Thai users admiring their appearances highlighted cultural exchanges. Some posts have gathered significant attention, like a TikTok of a sailor dancing in a nightclub, suggesting the crew deserved rest and sympathy after their long deployment.
Another post displayed troops relaxing by a pool, while others showed them in uniform. Local reports predict an economic boost from the visiting 5,000 personnel, though there was a minor incident involving two sailors outside a bar. Police described the matter as minor, with those involved returning to their ship for the remainder of the visit.
The connection between Pattaya and the U.S. military dates back to the Vietnam War era, when thousands of U.S. service members were stationed in Thailand.
