Eleven police officers were injured as demonstrators hurled rocks and garbage cans at them in Southampton, a city in southern England. A British cabinet minister deemed the scenes ‘unacceptable.’
The police and lawmakers in the UK called for calm on Wednesday after protests in Southampton escalated to violence. This unrest followed the release of footage depicting officers handcuffing the murder victim, Henry Nowak, while his attacker looked on last December. The footage ignited claims from right-wing commentators and politicians that the British police showed bias against white individuals.
On Tuesday night, hundreds of protesters assembled outside Southampton’s main police station. They attempted to reach the street where the attacker’s family resides, confront the police blocking the way, and attack officers elsewhere in the city. Footage revealed protesters throwing objects at police and clashing with officers, with some draped in the British flag.
Shabana Mahmood, the British home secretary overseeing police operations, condemned the violence as ‘completely unacceptable.’ In her statement, Ms. Mahmood asserted, ‘There can be no justification for hijacking this tragedy to incite violence and disorder. Those responsible will face the full force of the law.’
Ms. Mahmood extended her gratitude to the police, acknowledging their bravery and calm amidst the violence directed at them.
