A recent video showing an airport worker and military veteran struggling on a California tarmac has prompted thousands to contribute over $135,000 to support the man’s medical expenses and daily living costs. The footage, taken at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, has garnered nearly 6 million views on TikTok and ignited widespread online support.
Passenger Lacinda Thackeray captured the video after noticing the worker in severe pain while fulfilling his tasks. She expressed her desire to help him retire, moved by the sight of him facing difficulty.
“Watching him work so hard — he could barely move — truly broke my heart,” Thackeray said.
James Blair, the worker, is identified as a U.S. Navy veteran who served as an aircraft mechanic for a decade before transitioning to refueling planes. Despite enduring years of demanding physical work affecting his knees, Blair persisted in his job while also attending to his 90-year-old mother in hospice care.
Following the video’s circulation, viewers began donating to assist Blair with his medical costs and daily needs. The fundraiser has now surpassed $135,000, aiming for a $200,000 goal.
Speaking to CBS News, Blair shared his surprise as the donations grew. Having worked for 20 years, he had not anticipated such care and support from others.
“I’ve been doing this job for 20 years, and I just didn’t think anybody actually cared,” he remarked.
The donations have significantly eased the financial strain related to Blair’s medical challenges. The video also led to messages of encouragement from coworkers and strangers.
Many commenters praised Blair’s dedication and selflessness over the years, with colleagues attesting to his hard work. His military service was highlighted, emphasizing the respect he deserves.
“This is how we honor our veterans,” one viewer commented, celebrating the fundraiser’s success.
Kelly McGreal, production assistant at Fox News Digital, covered the story.
