Junior linebacker Vito Pickard Jr. aimed to make an impression for Homewood-Flossmoor. The significance extended beyond the Vikings to coach Troy McAllister, who faced his former team, Sandburg, on Friday night. Pickard recognized the importance for his coach and shared his determination with his teammates.
I knew this game was important for our coach because he was going up against his old school,Pickard expressed with resolve.I told everyone on the team that I was going to set the tone and make sure that we stay on point.
Pickard’s performance was instrumental for H-F. He recorded five tackles and scored a touchdown with a fumble return, contributing to a 35-13 SouthWest Suburban Conference victory over the Eagles.
Senior quarterback Rahsaan Coleman connected on a 64-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver John Gadson, energizing the Vikings. This performance was crucial after their 38-7 loss to Lincoln-Way East. On the other side, senior quarterback Sean Ruisz connected a 20-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Matykiewicz, who is headed to Northern Illinois.
Senior linebacker Cameron Wilkerson added a 19-yard fumble return touchdown, complementing Pickard’s impact. When I saw Vito score, I said I also had to get one,
Wilkerson said. Vito really changed the momentum. He’s coachable, fast, and knows how to tackle. His football IQ is very high.
Pickard proved a disruptive force, showcasing athletic ability acknowledged by McAllister, who had led Sandburg to the state playoffs three years out of four.
Vito embraced the challenge,McAllister noted. He accepted the coaching and understood his assignment.
Wearing No. 25, which he more commonly associates with a running back role from his past, Pickard demonstrated his agility and quickness by returning a fumble 34 yards for his first career touchdown late in the first quarter.
My style is fast,
Pickard explained. I saw the ball and decided it was mine to score. Coming off a loss, it was crucial to show leadership and keep morale high.
Arriving from a freshman season in Hammond, Indiana, Pickard had to quickly adjust to a new state and program. He connected this transition with McAllister and now flourishes as a second-year starter.
It was initially tough, but I worked hard in the offseason,
he recounted. My father encouraged me to play young, and football has always helped relieve stress.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Pickard is a versatile player who blends the qualities of a safety and a linebacker, using speed to pursue quarterbacks or cover receivers. His experience as a track sprinter emphasizes the value of quickness.
The atmosphere here is amazing,
Pickard shared. You have the band and the audience, and I love performing for them. I enjoy hitting and creating chaos.
Despite being quiet by nature, Pickard transforms on the field, elevating team spirit.
People consider me quiet, but on the field, I’m loud,Pickard said.Last night, I inspired the team with hope, making everyone strive for better performance.
