Warren Buffett Alters Donation Strategy, Steers Away from Gates Foundation

Billionaire Warren Buffett has made a notable change in his annual donation practices. He has decided to exclude Bill Gates’ foundation from his donations this year following the revelation of Gates’ connections with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Instead, Buffett plans to donate approximately $6 billion to four foundations linked to his own family. His announcement on Tuesday did not mention Gates.

Buffett also revealed his intentions to donate all of his remaining Berkshire Hathaway stock, valued at over $140 billion, by the end of 2034. Earlier, the distribution of his fortune was supposed to occur within 10 years after his death. Now, he aims to have his shares donated to four foundations by December 31, 2034, allowing the annual grants to each of his children’s managed foundations to grow alongside those of the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation.

The Gates Foundation expressed gratitude for Buffett’s previous support, stating that his gifts, exceeding $47 billion, have significantly helped their mission of enhancing health and opportunities globally. Despite Buffett’s change in donation strategy, the Gates Foundation remains financially stable due to Gates’ commitment to donate 99% of his wealth by 2045.

Buffett’s recent donations mirror those of the previous year, totaling around $6 billion. He plans to distribute about $4.5 billion in stock to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation this year, with $500 million being donated to each of the foundations run by his children: the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Novo Foundation.

Bill Gates, while denying any knowledge or involvement in Epstein’s crimes, clarified that he met Epstein to potentially fund charitable causes. Epstein, charged with abusing underage girls, died in a Manhattan federal facility in August 2019, with his death ruled as suicide.

In a past statement, Buffett announced his intent to stop donating to the Gates Foundation after his death, allowing his children to manage the distribution of his fortune. Recent developments have accelerated this decision.

Historically, Buffett and Gates were close friends, often communicating, playing bridge online, and vacationing together. Gates even served on the board of Buffett’s conglomerate, while Buffett served on the board of the Gates Foundation. However, their communication has been minimal since the release of Epstein-related documents.

Buffett previously supported Gates during controversies involving Epstein. At the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting, he intervened when Gates’ character was questioned, leading to consequences for the presenter involved.

Reflecting on the Epstein scandal, Buffett remarked on Epstein’s ability to deceive many people. He avoided discussing Gates’ involvement but stated a preference not to engage with anything potentially problematic in the future.

Recently, Gates has addressed his association with Epstein to his foundation staff. Documentation from the Justice Department includes interactions between Gates and Epstein concerning philanthropic initiatives. The foundation announced the hiring of an expert to review past engagements with Epstein and refine future partnership policies.

Buffett expressed disbelief at the number of influential individuals implicated in the Epstein scandal. He emphasized Epstein’s successful exploitation of personal vulnerabilities and expressed relief that Epstein never visited Omaha, his home for decades.

Buffett, renowned for his investment acumen that built Berkshire Hathaway, stepped down as CEO in January after a 60-year tenure. He remains chairman and the largest shareholder, with Greg Abel now leading the company as CEO.
