The Washington Commanders face a decisive season for several of their key players. Among them is Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. After dealing with injuries throughout the 2025 season, Daniels aims to make a strong comeback. His performance this fall is crucial as he approaches the end of his contract, making him eligible for new negotiations.
Head coach Dan Quinn, who led the team to the NFC championship in 2024, experienced a step back in 2025. With two new coordinators on board, Washington aims to enhance its performance in Quinn’s third year at the helm.
For veteran punter Tress Way, the season carries a different significance. Way, the longest-tenured player on the Commanders’ roster, revealed on Thursday that this year could mark his retirement. “Pro Bowls are sweet. Having that the rest of my life, just, a few jerseys hanging up with that (will) be really special for me,” Way shared via a video posted on X by JP Finlay of NBC Sports. “And this year too is special because I am pretty sure this is going to be my last season.” He informed general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn about his decision, preferring not to catch them off guard.
Before the season began, Way was appointed team captain alongside Jayden Daniels, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, linebacker Frankie Luvu, and safety Jeremy Reaves. Way entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears in 2013 and joined Washington in 2014. At 36, he secured second-team All-Pro honors in 2019 and earned three Pro Bowl nominations, including for the 2025 season.
