Washington Commanders Tackle Laremy Tunsil to Undergo Surgery

The Washington Commanders offensive lineup faces a significant change as head coach Dan Quinn announced that left tackle Laremy Tunsil will be sidelined indefinitely. Tunsil requires surgery for a torn triceps.

Quinn commented, “It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, and especially a great player like LT. He is an absolutely fantastic teammate, and he’ll be missed. We certainly can’t wait to get him back.”

Laremy Tunsil, wearing No. 78 for the Commanders, was injured during a drill on Saturday while contending against pass rusher Odafe Oweh. Immediately after the incident, Tunsil was attended to and taken away by the training staff.

In March, the Commanders made history by signing Tunsil to a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension. This deal rendered Tunsil the highest-paid tackle in NFL history, earning $30 million annually. The five-time Pro Bowler has consistently ranked as one of the NFL’s top left tackles since his initial drafting by the Miami Dolphins as the No. 13 overall pick. After three seasons in Miami, Tunsil joined the Houston Texans in 2019, staying for six seasons before moving to Washington.

“He is really on the top of his game right now,” Quinn noted, referring to Tunsil’s prowess in both run and pass-blocking. Due to Tunsil’s injury, Brandon Coleman will step in to fill the position. Coleman started 12 games as a rookie for the Commanders in 2024 and exhibited strong performance, including three starts last year.

Quinn stated, “He’s played a lot of winning football at left tackle here, and we know that he’s ready for it. He’s put in an excellent offseason, and the team is very confident in him.” With Coleman stepping into Tunsil’s role, veteran Andrew Wylie will maintain his position as a backup swing tackle. Quinn and general manager Adam Peters currently have no plans to seek outside help through free agency.
