The Washington Post must reinstate columnist Karen Attiah following her dismissal last year over social media posts she made after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa ruled that the paper lacked a valid reason to terminate Attiah, as reported by The New York Times. Espinosa stated The Post violated Attiah’s labor agreement, noting, “The Washington Post failed to establish the grievant engaged in gross misconduct.”
Attiah expressed relief at the arbitrator’s decision, emphasizing that her termination was unjust. She stated, “This decision confirms what we’ve said from the start: I was doing my job as an opinion writer, and this was wrongful termination.” Announcing her legal win on X, Attiah said, “I fought back. I’m happy to announce: I won my case against The Washington Post. They have been ordered to reinstate me immediately.”
A Washington Post spokesperson acknowledged the arbitration process but refrained from further comment. Attiah did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Her social media posts, particularly on the platform Bluesky, had sparked controversy. Attiah criticized the expectation of mourning for Kirk, whom she described as espousing violence. She also faced backlash for misattributing quotes to Kirk.
Attiah’s posts led to criticism after misquoting Kirk. In a July 2023 episode of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” Kirk discussed affirmative action, saying that some prominent Black figures got positions due to affirmative action. Attiah’s version of his words was considered misleading. Following this controversy, she was informed by The Post that her posts were considered “unacceptable” and amounted to “gross misconduct.”
Attiah pursued legal action against The Post for her termination and announced entering arbitration with them in June. The arbitrator’s decision now requires her reinstatement at The Post.
