Health officials urge people to take precautions as the West Nile virus season has begun earlier and more severely than in over 20 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed at least 48 cases, with 38 being severe, by June 30. Normally, only about 10 cases are reported by that time each year. This year, 23 states have reported the virus, the highest in a decade.
Dr. Erin Staples, a CDC expert on insect-borne diseases, highlighted the importance of recognizing that mosquito season is underway. She advised precautions during outdoor activities, especially while celebrating events like Independence Day, to prevent mosquito bites.
Arizona reports the most cases, with Maricopa County experiencing 29 out of the state’s 32 cases, including four deaths. Local officials recommend using bug spray with DEET, repairing window screens, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed. Melissa Kretschmer from the county health department emphasized the need to remove small water sources after rain or watering plants, as even small amounts, like in bottle caps, can foster mosquito growth.
The CDC suggests wearing long, loose-fitting clothing outdoors and avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
West Nile virus first appeared in the U.S. in 1999 in New York, spreading across the country and peaking in 2003 with nearly 10,000 cases. Many infections go unnoticed due to mild or no symptoms, such as headaches, body aches, and rashes. Severe cases may lead to brain or spinal cord inflammation. People over 60 and those with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of complications.
On average, health officials report 2,000 cases annually, including about 1,200 severe neurological illnesses and 100 deaths.
