The White House entered a brief lockdown on Saturday evening following gunfire nearby that resulted in at least two injuries, reported by four law enforcement officials. One person is in critical condition. Officials speculate one of these individuals might be the suspect, while the role of the other person remains unclear.
The U.S. Secret Service identified one suspect, engaging with and firing at this individual. No Secret Service agents were harmed in the incident. This information comes from two senior officials involved in the investigation.
The Secret Service acknowledged reports of the shooting near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and said they are verifying this information with officers at the location. Around 6:04 p.m., an NBC News crew near the White House reported hearing between 20 to 30 gunshots. Secret Service agents directed reporters on the North Lawn to move into the press briefing room swiftly.
While the White House was secured with Secret Service agents stationed outside and prepared, the lockdown including White House premises was lifted at 6:46 p.m.
FBI Director Kash Patel shared on social media that the FBI is present at the site, assisting the Secret Service. President Donald Trump is confirmed to be in the White House. Vice President JD Vance was previously confirmed at the location earlier in the day, although his current whereabouts post-incident are unclear.
The U.S. Capitol Police have yet to comment on the incident. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
