The final game in the City Series provided plenty of drama on Sunday afternoon at Rate Field. The White Sox briefly took the lead in the eighth inning with a three-run home run by Tristan Peters. This marked the first home run of Peters’ career. However, in the ninth inning, the Cubs responded with a game-tying three-run homer by Michael Conforto.
The real hero emerged in the 10th inning when White Sox catcher Edgar Quero, despite being in a major hitting slump, hit a game-winning two-run home run against Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison. This triumphant shot lifted the Sox to a 9-8 win before a sellout crowd of 38,608 fans.
“It feels amazing,” Quero stated. “Right away, when I hit the ball, I knew it was going deep. I didn’t know it was a homer since the field is big in that part. I felt it was really good contact.”
Quero entered the game with a batting average of .151 and had only one extra-base hit, a double, so far this season. His first home run of the year capped off a strong day with three hits.
“I was just happy for me, for the team, for everybody. I was focused,” he added, highlighting his preparation for the game.
The victory allowed the White Sox to win the series against the Cubs for the first time since 2022. Sox manager Will Venable stressed the importance of the win for both the team and its supporters.
“You understand the significance of the series and you want to perform well, not only because we want to win but for our fans too,” Venable said.
The Sox have now won three straight series against Seattle, Kansas City, and the Cubs, while the Cubs have lost three consecutive series at Texas, Atlanta, and Rate Field against the Sox. Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the competitive nature of the game despite the loss.
The game saw multiple lead changes, with the Cubs initially taking a 3-0 advantage. Michael Busch hit a two-run home run, and Alex Bregman scored on a wild pitch. The Sox fought back when Quero drove in a run with a single.
Miguel Vargas significantly contributed to the Sox’s efforts, scoring after being hit by a pitch and later hitting a two-run double to tie the game at 4 in the fifth inning.
The eighth inning saw the Sox take a 7-4 lead when Tristan Peters hit his decisive three-run home run. Peters, who excels at small ball, finished with a powerful swing that gave the Sox the advantage.
“Incredible, probably the most emotion I’ve ever shown on a field,” said Peters about his game-changing home run.
The Cubs made a late push with Conforto’s ninth-inning home run that tied the game. They briefly went ahead 8-7 in the 10th inning when Dansby Swanson scored on a grounder by Alex Bregman. However, Quero’s decisive home run in the bottom of the 10th secured the victory for the White Sox.
“It means a lot for everybody in the clubhouse, it means a lot to win this series,” Quero expressed.
Quero compared the significance of his home run to his major-league debut last season, suggesting they both rank highly in his personal achievements.
