Hadley Middle School in Homer Glen recently achieved recognition as one of four Illinois schools to receive the National Gold Star School award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Nationwide, 57 schools received this inaugural award, which acknowledges schools for leadership, innovation, and commitment to student success.
Principal Kristen Schroeder emphasized the school’s focus on student-centered decisions. She expressed that the award affirms the dedicated efforts at Hadley Middle School. The school community’s core values and vision reflect their educational philosophy.
The application for the award involved demonstrating the school’s culture, shared values, family engagement, and student empowerment, aligning with association standards. Letters of recommendation were submitted by teachers, parents, and Homer District 33C officials. The process required about three months to complete, involving essays and evidence collection.
Principal Schroeder and Assistant Principal Holly Odom shared their excitement upon receiving the award. Superintendent Craig Schoppe noted the enthusiasm derived from showcasing the school’s accomplishments.
“The excitement really comes from highlighting the dedication and hard work of our teachers and students,” said Odom.
Students actively participated in marking the achievement by estimating the percentage of schools nationwide that received similar recognition. Schroeder mentioned that the school is unified in setting and achieving goals, driven by a commitment to student success and positive relationships.
The school hosts a Multicultural Fair, welcoming community members, featuring cultural flags, culinary offerings, and performances, showcasing the diverse heritage of students.
Hadley Middle School offers various opportunities for student growth. The Student Council plays a role in setting a positive atmosphere and engaging in community activities. Their Student Expectations Assembly includes skits by leaders, demonstrating behavioral expectations in realistic scenarios.
The Mustang Shout-Out campaign encourages appreciation among peers for positive actions, fostering a culture of recognition. Activities extend beyond academics, with the Multicultural Club celebrating diverse backgrounds through events like fairs.
The Hadley Literacy Committee contributes to enhancing writing abilities and test scores. Principal Schroeder remarked regarding excellence in education:
“It’s every individual’s contributions, focusing on what benefits the students, that make a school great,” Schroeder said.
Through various school initiatives, students learn self-advocacy and understand the importance of their voices, according to Schroeder.
The award will be presented to the school in July at a Florida ceremony. Other recognized Illinois schools include Pleasantdale Elementary School in La Grange, St. Giles School in Oak Park, and St. Benedict Preparatory School in Chicago from the Archdiocese of Chicago.
