The Chicago White Sox managed to secure a significant win against the Houston Astros during Game 2 of the American League wild-card series, despite a narrowing lead. Initially leading by four runs, their advantage shrank to one by the fifth inning at Houston’s Daikin Park.
During a crucial moment in the game, the Sox decided to change pitchers. Anthony Kay was called in with two runners on base and only one out. Yordan Alvarez, a strong hitter, was next up to bat. Fortunately for the Sox, Kay managed to get Alvarez to line out to left field. However, the threat wasn’t completely neutralized as Kay walked Isaac Paredes, which loaded the bases for Jose Altuve. Altuve, who had previously hit a home run, then lined out to right field.
This sequence of plays shifted momentum back to the White Sox. In the sixth inning, Chase Meidroth hit a critical three-run home run, cementing their lead. This contributed to a 7-3 victory before an audience of 36,015 fans.
With this win, the Sox completed a 2-0 sweep over the Astros in the wild-card match. They now advance to face the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series. This next series begins on Saturday at Progressive Field.
The game began strongly for the White Sox, as they scored four runs in the first inning. Sam Antonacci kicked off with a double that narrowly eluded Alvarez. Kyle Teel’s sharp single allowed Antonacci to score. Following a fielding mistake by Nick Allen and a subsequent RBI single by Andrew Benintendi, the Sox quickly took a 3-0 lead. Benintendi later scored thanks to an RBI single from Tristan Peters, pushing their lead to 4-0.
Astros’ starter Hunter Brown struggled, granting four runs on five hits within just two-thirds of an inning before being replaced. However, the Astros reduced the deficit with a Jeremy Peña home run in their half of the first inning. Cam Smith added another home run in the second, and Altuve’s home run in the fourth brought the Astros closer with a score of 4-3.
Sox starter Sean Burke faced challenges from the Astros but managed to limit their advances by allowing only three runs over four innings.
Despite going without a base runner for several innings, the White Sox resurgence began with Benintendi’s walk in the sixth. When Peters also drew a walk, the Sox turned to Meidroth, who delivered a three-run homer to extend their lead to 7-3.
This triumph marked the Sox’s first postseason series victory since their 2005 World Series win, proving to be a defining moment for the team.
