The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, visited Bunia in eastern Congo on Saturday. The city faces a surge of a rare Ebola type, spreading quicker than containment efforts. Despite organized health responses, the virus outpaces measures, aided by new aid.
Tedros, expected to engage with health workers, local leaders, and affected families, emphasized the need for comprehensive support at the outbreak’s epicenter. “To combat the epidemic effectively, we must provide all necessary support,” he stated on Friday.
Current Outbreak Statistics
Recent WHO figures indicate 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths. However, “CBS Saturday Morning” suggested numbers might be three to four times higher. Uganda confirmed nine cases and one death.
No Approved Treatment or Vaccine
The Bundibugyo virus strain lacks an approved treatment or vaccine. “This situation is challenging, yet Congo has managed Ebola before. We’re hopeful they can control this outbreak again,” Tedros remarked after discussions with Congo’s Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka.
The WHO elevated its risk assessment to “very high” nationally. Medical aid arrived in Ituri, the outbreak’s center, with more expected. The U.S. pledged $80 million, raising its aid to over $112 million.
Response Lags Behind Outbreak
Bunia hospitals show enhanced organization with staffing, protective gear, and supplies. Nevertheless, arrivals continue, reported by the Associated Press on Friday. Efforts lag behind one of the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreaks recorded, warned Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Saturday.
“No previous Ebola outbreak has reached such case numbers so soon,” noted Dr. Alan Gonzalez, MSF’s deputy director of operations, urging swift testing expansion and aid deployment.
Health workers face heightened risks from local resistance to strict body handling protocols conflicting with burial practices. Attacks occurred against health centers. Militia and rebel activities complicate access in Ituri.
Increased Regional Spread
Cases extend to North and South Kivu provinces, where the M23 rebel group influences critical areas, including Goma and Bukavu. They reported two cases.
Border Closures Not Effective
Uganda and Rwanda closed borders with Congo. “Such closures and travel bans don’t prevent outbreak spread,” Tedros mentioned, highlighting transparency loss. “Reconsider these measures,” he urged, acknowledging Congo’s open reporting.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared entry bans for non-U.S. passport holders from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. U.S. airports, like JFK and Dulles, implemented enhanced screenings. Travelers exhibiting symptoms may face hospital evaluation.
On Friday, a Kenyan High Court judge halted a U.S. plan for an Ebola quarantine on a Kenyan air base, reflecting international tensions amid the crisis.
