Wildfire in Reno Causes Destruction and Evacuations
An uncontrollable wildfire rapidly spread in northwest Reno, Nevada, destroying homes and prompting evacuation of around 90,000 people on Sunday. The erratic and strong winds complicated efforts by firefighters to manage the blaze, which resulted in injuries to six individuals, including three first responders and three civilians.
Authorities identified the fire as human-caused, although specifics on the cause or intent were not shared. Starting on Saturday, the Hawk Fire expanded to over 23 square miles, disturbing the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest, an area bordered by residential and commercial properties near the California state line, and showed zero signs of containment.
Evacuations in Effect
Approximately 42,000 residents received mandatory evacuation orders as the “GO NOW” zone grew toward the University of Nevada’s perimeter. Furthermore, an adjacent evacuation warning was issued to 45,000 additional residents. Due to the anticipated worsening of the fire, people were advised to prepare for long-term displacement.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam urgently advised residents to evacuate immediately. Fire reports indicated serious “extreme fire behavior” due to gusts pushing the flames through dry brush. Authorities expected challenging fire conditions to continue for at least the next 12 hours.
A Family’s Loss and Response
Cari Kieffer’s home was confirmed destroyed, adding to the total unknown number of homes affected. While attending her son’s football match, Kieffer learned of her house’s risk from the advancing fire. Despite attempts to save belongings, the family faced severe losses.
The Kieffer family managed to save their dogs and some possessions, including clothes, a Bible, wedding photos, and ashes of Kieffer’s mother. Unfortunately, items like birth certificates and childhood photos were left behind during their rushed evacuation.
State of Emergency Declared
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County, authorizing the Nevada National Guard’s deployment of two helicopter crews and 60 troops to assist in securing evacuated areas. Nearly 800 firefighting personnel engaged, while power outages affected 10,000 clients in the county.
The wildfire forced closures along portions of U.S. Route 395, and the Reno-Sparks Convention Center opened as an evacuation shelter. Casinos offered special rates to evacuees, although pets were directed to alternate locations outside the convention center.
Rapid Fire Spread
The fire’s intensity increased drastically due to persistent winds, with Tyler Duvall recounting the blaze threatening his residence after its negligible size earlier. Concurrently, 15 new fires ignited across Nevada amid prolonged dry conditions, enhancing the risk.
Eastern Washington recently faced similar wildfires, demanding evacuations of 60,000 individuals near Spokane, while threats from previous wildfires displaced over 13,000 residents around Reno.
Impact on Individuals
Rick Arrate, residing on Peavine Mountain, witnessed the wildfire overwhelming firefighting efforts. Despite precautionary measures, changing winds forced immediate evacuation, leaving Arrate with only his dogs.
Separate crowdfunding initiatives emerged to support families like Arrate’s and the Kieffers, offering aid during their challenging times.
Despite residing in a newly disturbing region, Ted Melden, recently relocating from South Carolina, remained vigilant with packed emergency supplies. He recalled surviving several natural disasters back east.
David Barb returned from hunting to find his taxidermy shop entirely gone, attributed to the fire’s devastation, although quick thinking from a landscaping crew saved his nearby home.
Monitoring Continues
While the University of Nevada remained outside the immediate danger zone, hospitals evacuated patients under watchful community supervision maintaining readiness for necessary actions.
First responders faced difficulty accessing hotspots during the fire’s unpredictable spread over the weekend, requiring urgent evacuation coordination amid communication challenges.
