Will Levis is returning to the NFL, aiming to revive a career that faltered with the Tennessee Titans. He is joining a more successful team that provides an environment conducive to learning and improvement. This opportunity presents itself with the New York Jets.
Recently, Levis signed with the Jets practice squad. Corresponding reports indicate the release of Bailey Zappe to accommodate this move. There are no indications of Geno Smith being replaced as the starting quarterback. The Jets lack a star backup behind Smith, with rookie Cade Klubnik currently in that position. Having an experienced young player with potential on the roster is a strategic move, and Levis fits that profile.
Levis, who joined the NFL from Kentucky as a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, was initially considered one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects. His potential was evident in his debut, where he threw four touchdown passes to secure a win over Atlanta. However, his rookie season was marred by an ankle injury, disrupting his momentum.
Though Levis showed promise with his arm strength and playmaking ability, the following season proved challenging. His performance in 2024 was plagued by turnovers, sacks, and inconsistency. He threw 13 touchdowns but also 12 interceptions, contributing to the Titans’ struggles during his starts. The team concluded the games he started with a 2-10 record.
A right shoulder injury against Miami exacerbated his issues, requiring surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. The arrival of Cam Ward as the Titans’ top draft pick in 2025 sealed Levis’ fate with the team, leading to his release.
At 27, Levis needs proper coaching, something the Jets can provide. Frank Reich, the offensive coordinator, brings a wealth of experience, having coached MVP Peyton Manning and stars like Philip Rivers and Andrew Luck. Jets quarterback coach Bill Musgrave has a successful history with Matt Ryan and Derek Carr, guiding them to Pro Bowl appearances.
While the Jets’ organization isn’t known for its patience or stability, effective coaching can assist Levis in realizing his potential. This marks a critical point in his NFL journey. He remains 27 with notable arm talent, yet he must convince another team that his decision-making and health align with his physical attributes to succeed.
