WNBA Addresses Transgender Athlete Participation
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has communicated with teams regarding the ongoing discussions on transgender athletes in women’s basketball. In a memo sent to teams, Engelbert emphasized that this topic has attracted questions and is likely to remain in the spotlight.
She informed teams of the league’s approach, addressing their media interactions. Next week, a task force comprising team presidents and general managers will continue the discussion at a scheduled meeting.
Recently, Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham expressed support for barring transgender individuals from women’s sports in an ESPN article. Her comments led to protests during the Fever’s road games and a protest at a home game against Las Vegas. A rally supporting Cunningham is planned for the team’s upcoming game in Chicago, organized by two conservative groups.
The league has not publicly commented on the matter. Engelbert assured that their approach will remain thoughtful and respect league values. The collective bargaining agreement allows only women to play in the WNBA, but lacks specific terms regarding gender identity or sex assigned at birth.
Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declared eligibility for the WNBA draft, identifying as women. Engelbert highlighted the complexity of the issue, stating plans for future conversations and listening sessions with team leaders and the Players Association.
In a social media statement, the WNBA Players’ Association underscored their commitment to diversity and inclusion, rejecting any political misuse. They advocate for justice and equality, protecting women’s sports while ensuring inclusiveness for all individuals, including transgender people.
Several WNBA figures, like Seattle Storm center Stefanie Dolson and Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, support transgender athlete inclusion. Reeve emphasized the importance of safeguarding transgender children, framing it as a human rights issue.
