On Monday, Worcester police announced that Karen Solomon, sought for questioning in the death of her husband Kurt Solomon, was found dead following a lengthy search. Kurt, a seasoned Worcester police officer, was discovered dead at their Wildwood Avenue residence early Tuesday morning.
Karen was last seen dressed in pajama shorts and a tank top, and authorities considered her to be potentially armed and dangerous. Her body was discovered by two Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital employees on Monday in a wooded area.
“At no time did the Solomon family have any history of domestic abuse. I want to make myself absolutely clear, at this point that has nothing to do with this case,” stated Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier.
Chief Saucier described the situation as a tragic murder-suicide. A gun found near Karen’s body supports this conclusion. The active search included the area near Mill Street and Coes Pond, not far from the Solomon residence, with support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
The Solomon family’s statement expressed deep sorrow: “The nightmare of the past week has left our family heartbroken and rudderless.” They expressed gratitude for the compassion shown by all agencies involved.
The family extended thanks to the departments involved and to those offering prayers and sympathies, emphasizing the comfort these gestures provided.
Who is Karen Solomon?
Karen Solomon, aged 58, was married to Kurt and worked to address mental health issues among first responders. She founded First H.E.L.P. and developed an app to support police officers in crisis. In 2016, she discussed this mission in an interview with WBZ-TV.
Beyond her advocacy, Karen authored “Hearts Beneath the Badge,” a book that highlighted positive actions by law enforcement, such as saving lives and purchasing meals for others.
Who is Kurt Solomon?
Officer Kurt Solomon, a dedicated member of the Worcester Police Department for 31 years, was close to retirement. He leaves behind two adult sons. His commitment to the department earned him respect and affection from colleagues.
“Kurt was a loved and respected member of our department with 31 years,” stated Officer Thomas Duffy, president of NEPBA Local 911. “When you serve 31 years with an individual, you become more than co-workers, you become family and today we lost a member of our family.”
Kurt Solomon’s cause of death has not been released.
