The World Cup opening ceremony delighted fans as Shakira, Maná, Andrea Bocelli, and Salma Hayek took the stage before Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa. Shakira delivered a vibrant performance of “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official song, alongside Burna Boy. Reflecting on her past World Cup hits, including 2010’s “Waka Waka,” Shakira emphasized the importance of rhythm, danceability, and anthem-like qualities in a successful World Cup song. The Colombian star has previously graced the World Cup stage in 2006, 2010, and 2014. She will also perform at the first World Cup final halftime show at MetLife Stadium with Madonna and BTS.
A Heartfelt Welcome
Singer Lila Downs greeted fans and players in Spanish, English, Mixtec, and Nahuatl, highlighting Mexico’s cultural diversity. Wearing a traditional huipil, Downs proudly introduced Mexico as a nation of rich heritage. Originally from Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, with a strong Mixtec background, Downs voiced her pride in her country, expressing her support for Mexico’s soccer team.
Musical Highlights
Maná energized the crowd with “Oye Mi Amor,” joined by pre-Hispanic dancers. Founded in 1986, the band has sold over 40 million records and recently announced a Latin American tour. Los Ángeles Azules, originating from Iztapalapa, Mexico City, performed “Por Ella” with Belinda, a highlight of FIFA’s World Cup album. Colombian artist J Balvin delivered a lively performance, featuring hits like “Que Calor” and “I Like It,” showcasing his global stage experience.
Performer Danny Ocean sang “Partidazo,” accompanied by dancers in modernized traditional Jalisco attire. Two Labubus mascots donned soccer jerseys, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Celebrity Contributions
Actress Salma Hayek, a passionate soccer fan, gave a welcome speech, emphasizing Mexico’s pride in hosting the event. Originally from Veracruz, Hayek serves as an ambassador for the 2026 World Cup.
Opera and K-Pop Collaboration
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and South Korean EJAE joined forces for the anthem “DNA” with DJ David Guetta during the flag parade. Bocelli, known for his immense fanbase, performed in Mexico City in April. EJAE’s contributions to the film “KPop Demon Hunters” and the Oscar-winning song “Golden” are noted highlights.
National Anthem Performers
Singers Tyla and Alejandro Fernandez took center stage for the anthems of South Africa and Mexico, respectively. Tyla, recognized for winning a Grammy for best African music performance, is a rising star. Fernandez, son of the iconic Vicente Fernandez, remains devoted to regional Mexican music, contributing “Mi México Lindo” to FIFA’s album.
