WWII Plane Crash at Pennsylvania Airport: Pilot Rescued
A World War II-era aircraft crashed while attempting to land at a Pennsylvania airport on Wednesday evening. The crash left the pilot trapped inside the overturned plane before he was freed by police and an airport employee.
Limerick Township police arrived at Heritage Field Airport around 7:17 p.m. They discovered the small aircraft upside down on the runway with the pilot, its sole occupant, trapped inside. An airport employee and officers managed to free the pilot from his parachute and extract him from the plane.
“We got reports the pilot was trapped in the plane. On our arrival, they were pulling him out. So there was no extrication needed by the fire department,” shared Limerick Township Fire Chief Ken Shuler with FOX29 Philadelphia.
The pilot was conscious, able to stand, but had visible cuts, according to the police. He received treatment at the scene from Freedom Valley Medical Rescue and was then taken to a hospital. Reports stated that the pilot was transported to Reading Trauma Center, remaining alert and communicative after the crash.
The plane departed from Pottstown and was bound for Quakertown, with Limerick Township officials noting it had been airborne for approximately nine minutes before the crash. The incident resulted in a fuel leak, and firefighters stayed on site to manage the spill and monitor for potential fires.
Formerly known as Pottstown Municipal Airport, Heritage Field Airport serves private and recreational planes. The airport stayed closed on Wednesday night while crews dealt with the fuel leak and removed the wrecked aircraft. The cause of the crash was not immediately identified, and police confirmed that aviation authorities are investigating.
