Wynonna Judd is opening up about the challenges she faced while trying to support her daughter, Grace Kelley, through a lengthy battle with methamphetamine addiction. Kelley, 30, has struggled with substance abuse and legal issues for over a decade. She is currently serving a 15-month sentence in Rockingham County Jail in Virginia for driving with a suspended or revoked license.
In a candid interview, Judd admitted her efforts to help often worsened Kelley’s situation. “I lost myself with Grace and enabled her by giving her money,” Judd shared. “I thought I was helping her, but instead, I was buying her drugs.” She expressed feelings of guilt but learned that self-improvement could positively influence others.
Judd advised parents in similar situations to work on themselves to let their children see the positivity in change. Her album “The Hard Truth,” her first solo project in over ten years, examines her struggles, including her relationship with her late mother, Naomi Judd, and her daughter.
The six-time Grammy Award winner acknowledged the potential that Kelley might not overcome her addiction. Judd also shared that she no longer speaks with Kelley, who stopped contacting her last year. “I realized enabling her could have life-or-death consequences,” Judd said about the painful decision to set boundaries.
Judd expressed hope for reunion with Kelley, emphasizing that sobriety must come first. Drawing from her own experience in rehab for food addiction, Judd said, “You need to want it yourself.”
The impact of Judd’s career on Kelley was also discussed. Kelley felt neglected due to her mother’s demanding schedule, and Judd admitted feeling guilty over time spent away. In the meantime, Judd and her husband, Cactus Moser, provide a stable environment for Kelley’s daughter, Kaliyah, whom they legally adopted.
Judd is focused on offering Kaliyah a grounded upbringing on their 500-acre farm in Tennessee. “We’re living simply,” Judd described, balancing chores, cooking, and outdoor activities.
Kelley reportedly welcomed another child while incarcerated, news that Judd discovered through social media. Despite this, Judd remains committed to raising Kaliyah in a loving environment, while keeping hope alive for Kelley’s recovery.
