Junior receiver/tight end Xavier Pratt showcased his skills by scoring a touchdown, boosting Homewood-Flossmoor’s offense after a sluggish beginning. He then returned to the line to handle the long-snapping duties for the extra point. Embracing the role of long snapper, Pratt notes its significance despite the lack of recognition. “I started doing it last year,” Pratt said. “It makes me versatile. Showing recruiters I can score and then calmly snap the ball could be important.”
Pratt’s consistent performance is crucial for the Vikings. His pivotal 19-yard touchdown catch from Rahsaan Coleman enabled H-F to secure a 35-0 win over Richards. Coleman completed 11 of 18 passes for 173 yards and two TDs, including a significant 60-yard scoring pass to Ashton Jones. Sophomore running back Theodore Williams contributed 71 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.
Defensively, Robert Williams III and Zen Cambric each intercepted a pass — Williams returned his 50 yards for a touchdown — bolstering the Vikings’ (2-0) defense that limited Richards to just 166 yards. Javier Stewart made a sack and tackle for a loss, while Isaiah Flowers secured an interception for the Bulldogs (0-2).
Richards initially kept the score close, trailing 7-0 at halftime before Coleman and Pratt connected for the 19-yard touchdown to start the second half that altered the game’s momentum. “The coaches inspired us during halftime,” Pratt said. “I knew I had to make a play. The guy covering me couldn’t keep up, and Rahsaan delivered the ball perfectly.” Coleman had faith in Pratt’s ability. “Xavier is a machine,” Coleman said. “His discipline and work ethic are outstanding.”
Though long-snapping is often overlooked, Pratt embraces the role and isn’t intimidated by its challenges. “I figured I could do it,” Pratt said. “Pressure builds diamonds. I’ve been taught to handle pressure for the team.” His wrestling background adds toughness, having competed since age five. “Wrestling builds a mentality,” Pratt said. “I’ve been involved since before playing football; it’s more challenging.”
Pratt’s 19-yard touchdown ignited a 28-point second-half surge for H-F. The defense delivered back-to-back shutouts following a 31-0 victory over Bolingbrook in the season opener. Coach Troy McAllister praised the defense’s front, emphasizing their dominant performance that supports other players to excel.
Offensively and on special teams, McAllister trusts Pratt, who has strong ties to H-F football. His father, Alexander, is an assistant coach, while his brother also made his mark as the team’s quarterback. “Xavier is a coach’s son. His high football IQ is rooted in his upbringing, amplified by his 6-3, 210-pound frame and competitive spirit,” McAllister said. “He drives our offense.”
