Chinese leader Xi Jinping will visit North Korea next week. This marks his first visit in nearly seven years, highlighting China’s efforts to strengthen its ties with its neighboring nuclear state.
North Korea, under Kim Jong Un, has been reaching out to Russia in recent years through military support in international conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine. However, Kim has also been focusing on reinforcing relations with China, given its role as North Korea’s main trading partner and aid provider.
William Yang, an analyst from the International Crisis Group, notes that Xi’s visit aims to reestablish China’s influence over North Korea amid the latter’s growing relationship with Russia. China seeks to safeguard its strategic interests in Northeast Asia through this diplomatic engagement.
Xi will conduct a state visit from Monday to Tuesday. His last visit took place in June 2019. This visit follows Xi hosting both U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing. These meetings underscore China’s active engagement in international diplomacy.
The announcement comes amid North Korea’s recent unveiling of a new facility for producing nuclear material. The development of such facilities remains a concern for the United States. Economic sanctions from the U.N. have long targeted North Korea’s nuclear program.
Analysts believe Kim’s disclosure of this facility aims to cement North Korea’s status as a nuclear power, potentially leading to calls for lifting sanctions and initiating arms reduction talks with the U.S. Kim has remained focused on expanding his nuclear arsenal following stalled diplomacy with Trump in 2019.
China’s stance on North Korea’s denuclearization will be closely observed during Xi’s visit. The ongoing support and cooperation between China, North Korea, and Russia play a significant role in regional politics.
Xi and Kim previously met in Beijing, where they pledged mutual support. Kim’s presence at a military parade in China, alongside international leaders like Putin, signified his commitment to strengthening alliances with China and Russia. Both countries have historically opposed increased sanctions on North Korea in international forums.
Xi’s trip marks his rare international travel since the Covid-19 pandemic. His overseas visits have been limited, with his last visit being to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Xi’s engagement with global leaders reflects China’s stance on multipolar diplomacy and strategic alliances.
