Zelensky Offers Peace Talks in Open Letter to Putin Amid Recent Strikes

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine recently addressed President Vladimir V. Putin in an open letter. The letter came after a series of Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia and battlefield successes. Zelensky invited Putin to resume peace discussions, but his tone included criticism over Russia’s wartime challenges and reliance on China. He also noted Putin’s advancing age.

The Ukrainian president has issued video statements to Putin and the Russian public at various points during the conflict. However, this particular letter stands out as being especially direct and critical.

Zelensky highlighted that Putin has spent a significant portion of his 26-year leadership engaged in conflicts with Ukraine. This period includes Russia’s military action in eastern Ukraine starting in 2014 and a full-scale invasion launched in 2022.

Zelensky offered the possibility of a cease-fire if Putin was interested. He expressed willingness to engage in direct talks outside of the U.S.-led negotiation framework. These negotiations, directed by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, halted after the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran in February.

Zelensky proposed involving European countries and suggested hosting the leaders’ meeting in Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation. He has previously extended invitations for direct discussions with Putin, though no outcomes have been reached.
