The San Francisco 49ers opened their season with a decisive win, defeating division rivals the Los Angeles Rams 27-7. This game took place before a large crowd in Melbourne, Australia, as part of the NFL International Series.
Both teams embarked on the lengthy journey from the U.S. to Melbourne. The 49ers arrived nearly a week ahead of the game, whereas the Rams reached the city just over a day before kickoff. Some have speculated that the Rams’ late arrival might have impacted their performance, as they appeared unprepared compared to the team favored to win the Super Bowl.
“When did they get out here?”
New 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans humorously questioned the Rams’ travel schedule during the postgame interview. Someone informed him that the Rams had arrived “25 hours ago.” Evans remarked, “You’ve gotta give your body time to adjust.” He also noted that while timing adjustments are crucial, the 49ers were focused on executing their strategy.
Evans was a significant addition to the 49ers this offseason, providing quarterback Brock Purdy with another strong target. During the game, Purdy threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns, one of which was caught by Evans. Evans finished with six receptions for 49 yards. Other key contributors were Demarcus Robinson, with a touchdown and 50 yards, and Deebo Samuel, who also scored and accumulated 48 yards.
For the Rams, quarterback Matthew Stafford faced challenges, completing 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards, including an interception. His team managed only 290 yards of total offense, scoring a lone touchdown via running back Kyren Williams.
Post-match analysis suggests the Rams suffered from jet lag and a lack of acclimatization to Australia, unlike the 49ers. Still, Rams head coach Sean McVay stood by their travel decision, stating it did not contribute to their lackluster performance.
