Chicago Cubs major-league coach Jonathan Mota met with young player Moisés Ballesteros to discuss challenging news on Wednesday night. At 22 years old, Ballesteros was informed of his reassignment to the minors as outfielder Justin Dean was called up to replace him. Mota, sharing a Venezuelan background with Ballesteros, tried to comfort the player and explain the decision. “Of course, he was sad,” Mota remarked. “No one wants to be sent to the minor leagues.”
Mota emphasized that Ballesteros’ performance was not the reason for the shift. “He needs regular playtime, which he isn’t getting right now,” Mota stated. “This move is about ensuring he can play daily.” Ballesteros started the season strong, holding a .400 average after an April game in Los Angeles as the Cubs went through a victorious 10-game streak. Unfortunately, his performance declined, hitting just .139 in 36 games thereafter.
Other roster adjustments affected Matt Shaw and Seiya Suzuki’s roles. Shaw returned from injury, playing consistently and taking over right field responsibilities. Meanwhile, Suzuki filled the designated hitter spot after a knee tweak. As a result, Ballesteros received fewer opportunities.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell explained, “Ballesteros needs more catching experience, best achieved in Triple-A right now.” Friday’s game showcased why Ballesteros’ reassignment aligned with Cubs’ strategy. Through solid offensive efforts, the Cubs dominated the Toronto Blue Jays 16-2. The victory was marked by Carson Kelly’s grand slam and effective strategies against pitcher Kevin Gausman.
Counsell praised the Cubs for their disciplined approach against Gausman, a challenging pitcher. “We forced him into the zone, managing the split and slider effectively,” Counsell noted. Following a tough month averaging just 3.21 runs, the Cubs improved significantly, scoring 6.5 runs per game over eight recent matches.
Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong highlighted the importance of consistency. “It’s about continuing to perform,” Crow-Armstrong reflected after extending his on-base streak to 22 games. Ben Brown’s pitching played a crucial role, delivering six strong innings and achieving a 1.85 ERA this season despite a brief setback.
Additionally, Justin Dean, newly added to the roster and primarily noted as a runner, took advantage of his opportunity, securing his first major-league hit with a three-run triple. Dean expressed his joy, intent on preserving the memory of this accomplishment. Celebrating his milestone, Dean plans to share the moment with his family.
