Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced scrutiny after the detention of Franklin Humberto Coral Garrido, a Colombian immigrant and progressive influencer known as Beto Coral. The incident occurred in Phoenix, as Coral criticized a Trump-endorsed candidate in Colombia’s upcoming presidential election.
Coral, who supports Colombian President Gustavo Petro, found himself at odds with Abelardo De La Espriella, a right-wing candidate backed by former President Donald Trump. Immigration authorities arrested Coral on Tuesday, coinciding with Rubio’s memo labeling him deportable.
According to the memo, obtained by The New York Times, Coral arrived in the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2015. His pending asylum application has not prevented authorities from considering his political activities supportive of Petro’s government as a reason for deportation. Rubio stated that allowing Coral to stay would undermine U.S. foreign policy and suggest U.S. platforms can be used for politically motivated campaigns without repercussions.
Rubio has used his position to recommend deportations of various immigrants, aiming to maintain U.S. foreign policy objectives. His memos typically target those involved in activities perceived as conflicting with such goals. This includes Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student arrested the previous year after protesting Israel.
The actions taken by Rubio have ignited discussions on the intersection of immigration policy and foreign relations. Critics argue these actions might suppress free speech and political dissent, while supporters believe they protect national interests.
