Brazil secured a comfortable victory over Haiti in their second World Cup match. Matheus Cunha scored twice, while Vinicius Junior added another, giving Brazil a 3-0 win at Lincoln Financial Field. This win places Carlo Ancelotti’s team at the top of Group C with four points from two matches, after a 1-1 draw with Morocco in their opening game. Earlier, Morocco defeated Scotland 1-0. Haiti, meanwhile, faces elimination from the tournament, having lost their second consecutive match.
Brazil’s Improved Performance
Brazil displayed a much-improved performance compared to their previous game against Morocco. Despite concerns about an injury sustained by Raphinha, the team looked more organized. The Barcelona forward was forced to leave the field with a suspected hamstring injury in the first half.
Ancelotti expressed optimism about Neymar’s availability for Brazil’s final group game against Scotland on June 24. He mentioned that Neymar, recovering from a calf injury, would begin training individually on Sunday and with the team on Monday. Neymar has missed Brazil’s first two matches as he recovers.
Brazil’s Tactical Shifts
Brazil’s gameplay showed notable improvements, especially in their tactical approach. Ancelotti’s decision to revert to Matheus Cunha proved beneficial. Cunha’s movement created opportunities for Vinicius Junior to find space and link up with the midfield. This allowed for smoother transitions and more structured play, unlike their previous match against Morocco.
Cunha’s involvement in both attack and defense was evident when he tackled in the build-up to his first goal. The attacking trio of Lucas Paqueta, Cunha, and Vinicius worked well together, exchanging positions and passes fluidly.
Challenges and Options for Brazil
Raphinha’s injury poses a challenge for Brazil. Although he has had injury issues and inconsistent World Cup performances, his ability and running are valuable. Without him, Ancelotti might rely on Rayan, the Bournemouth winger, or Luiz Henrique, both offering different dynamics but lacking Raphinha’s work-rate.
Cunha’s Case for a Starting Role
The debate over Brazil’s forward position appears settled with Cunha’s performance. Ancelotti had previously opted for a classic No 9 role with Igor Thiago but saw limited results against Morocco. Cunha, however, demonstrated versatility by supporting midfield play and capitalizing on scoring chances.
His effectiveness was clear, as he netted two goals and positioned himself as a key player for Brazil’s attacking strategy moving forward.
Looking Ahead
The final Group C matches are scheduled for June 24. Brazil will face Scotland in Miami, while Haiti takes on Morocco in Atlanta. The team finishing first in Group C will compete against the Group F runner-up on June 29 in Houston. The second-place finisher will play against the Group F winner in Monterrey. If a team advances as a third-place qualifier, they will face a group winner from Group A, E, or I in Boston, Mexico City, or New York.
