The FBI has successfully captured Herbert Leon Kimble, a fugitive accused of masterminding a $1.2 billion Medicare fraud scheme. Kimble was arrested in the Philippines and returned to the United States after evading authorities for nearly two years, becoming the second individual apprehended from the FBI’s ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list.
Details of the Fraud Case
Prosecutors allege that Kimble operated a healthcare fraud scheme from 2014 to 2019, falsely billing Medicare over $1.2 billion. The fraudulent operation reportedly affected thousands of beneficiaries, primarily the elderly, using call centers to direct patients toward unnecessary orthopedic braces.
Kimble pleaded guilty in 2019 to multiple federal offenses, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, healthcare fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, making false claims, and offering kickbacks. He failed to appear for sentencing in August 2024, prompting a federal arrest warrant and an international manhunt.
Justice Department Initiatives
The capture of Kimble coincides with the Justice Department’s efforts to combat fraud through the ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list. This initiative aims to publicly identify individuals involved in significant fraud cases. Recently, authorities apprehended another suspect, Said Abdullahi Ereg, wanted for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the joint efforts of President Donald Trump’s administration and Vice President J.D. Vance. The White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud is working alongside the newly created National Fraud Enforcement Division. The task force’s new initiatives are designed to protect taxpayer dollars and prevent fraudulent activities.
Government Responses and Reactions
Vice President J.D. Vance acknowledged the importance of the ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ list in locating Kimble. “If you defraud the American people, we will find you and we will bring you to justice,” Vance stated.
Additionally, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche remarked that Kimble’s arrest demonstrates that fleeing the United States does not provide protection from justice. “Under President Trump’s leadership, the FBI has apprehended two fraudsters from its recently unveiled Most Wanted Fraudster list in just two weeks,” Blanche stated on social media.
With ongoing efforts to combat fraud, authorities emphasize the importance of international cooperation and dedicated investigative work to bring criminals like Kimble to justice.
