President Donald Trump again criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, claiming she repeatedly asked for a photo with him at the G7 Summit in France. Trump posted on Truth Social accusing her of failing to support the U.S. during the war in Iran. However, Meloni denied these claims, stating they were fabricated.
Meloni expressed surprise at Trump’s behavior towards allies, noting it was not unprecedented. Tension has been escalating between Trump and Meloni, particularly after Italy’s refusal to allow U.S. forces to use its airbase in Sicily for operations related to the Iran conflict. The Guardian reported this incident in March.
Trump criticized not only Meloni but also other NATO allies like the UK, Germany, and France, for their perceived lack of military support. Trump’s dissatisfaction stems from what he views as inadequate assistance despite America’s significant defense expenditure for NATO allies.
Meloni responded to Trump’s criticisms on Instagram, defending her focus on Italy’s national interests and dismissing Trump’s opinion on her popularity. She emphasized the sovereignty of Italy and her commitment to abiding by existing military base agreements.
Previously close, Trump and Meloni’s relationship has cooled, especially after U.S. tariffs on EU imports affected Italy. Meloni, sharing some of Trump’s conservative values, was initially a strong supporter and attended his 2025 inauguration, an honor unique among EU leaders.
Their political discord grew more significant when Trump criticized Pope Leo for his stance on Iran, remarks Meloni described as unacceptable. Meloni has reiterated Italy’s neutrality in the Iran war and advocated for diplomacy in addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Realigned diplomacy efforts include a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran, halting hostilities for 60 days. Tensions remain as talks temporarily paused due to regional conflicts but are set to resume.
