The Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, a frequent destination for tourists from the U.S. and globally, experienced a significant fire. This incident impacted nearly 1,700 tourists and led to the death of an Italian citizen, authorities report.
Hotel executive Amanda Santana noted that affected guests lost their identification, including passports. Efforts are underway with embassies and various governments to enable their safe return home. Hotel officials are collaborating with police to facilitate online report filings needed by guests.
Tourists have been relocated to nearby accommodations in Punta Cana and Bayahibe. General Manuel Méndez, head of the nation’s Emergency Operations Center, said the circumstances around the Italian woman’s death are under investigation. Despite the disruption, tourism in the area remains operational.
The resort was 84% full when the fire started. The Emergency Operations Center notes wind and thatched roof sections contributed to the fire’s quick spread.
