Germany’s Narrow Escape
Germany is known for its strong World Cup performances, and it’s not without reason. In a recent match, they faced a tough challenge against Ivory Coast, trailing 1-0 due to Franck Kessie’s goal. However, Deniz Undav of Stuttgart came to the rescue, scoring two second-half goals and securing Germany’s place in the last 32.
The match was only the second comeback victory of the tournament, with the first being South Korea’s win against the Czech Republic. For much of the game, Germany struggled, especially with their attack during the first half as Nagelsmann’s midfielder-heavy strategy failed against Ivory Coast’s 4-1-4-1 formation.
Key players like Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala were unable to control the ball in dangerous areas. A pivotal moment came from a Kai Havertz header, saved by Yahia Fofana. The introduction of Deniz Undav into a strike partnership with Havertz at the 60-minute mark significantly improved Germany’s performance.
Undav tied the game when he tapped in a cross from substitute Nadiem Amiri. Despite Ivory Coast’s late efforts, Germany clinched the win with a precise move from Felix Nmecha to Undav. The team avoided repeating the group-stage exits of the previous World Cups.
Deniz Undav’s Impact
Nagelsmann’s substitution strategy paid off. Amiri’s cross and Undav’s finish were crucial. Undav scored 19 Bundesliga goals last season, ranking only behind Harry Kane. His journey from the German fourth tier to Union Saint-Gilloise and now a key player demonstrates his growth.
Undav’s finishing skills are praised, yet the need for his contribution indicates Germany’s underwhelming performance. Nagelsmann effectively utilized Undav’s prowess, but it raises concerns about the team’s overall play.
African Teams Show Promise
Ivory Coast impressed, continuing the strong performances of African teams in the tournament. With 10 teams, twice as many as in 2022, African sides are making their presence felt.
Ivory Coast defended well and attacked with speed, revealing Joshua Kimmich’s defensive flaws. Other African teams include Morocco, Senegal, Cape Verde, Egypt, DR Congo, and Ghana, each showing competitive spirit and potential to advance.
Germany’s Defensive Challenges
Germany’s defensive weaknesses were clear, vulnerable to turnovers and quick breaks from Ivory Coast. The goal they conceded showcased the need for better balance.
Germany’s midfield prioritizes ball progression but sacrifices defensive strength. Kimmich’s inability to prevent the cross for Kessie’s goal was telling. Adjusting the team structure, possibly sacrificing an attacking player for stronger midfield support, could be necessary.
Elye Wahi’s Controversial Week
Elye Wahi faced allegations related to match-fixing, affecting his entry into Canada. He was initially barred but later allowed to join the tournament.
French anti-corruption authorities had investigated claims he received a yellow card deliberately. Although arrested, he wasn’t charged and thus permitted to travel. The investigation remains ongoing, impacting Wahi’s participation in Ivory Coast’s matches.
Despite starting in Ivory Coast’s opening win, Wahi was benched as the manager adjusted the team’s formation. His involvement remains uncertain amid legal proceedings.
