Fiesta Back of the Yards: A Celebration of Culture and Community
On a Saturday afternoon, families and children moved through crowds, passing bright carnival games on Ashland Avenue. The air was filled with the scent of fried food and Latin music. This scene was part of the Fiesta Back of the Yards, a three-day event expecting over 100,000 visitors, celebrating the vibrant South Side neighborhood. Now in its 35th year, the Fiesta offers a safe environment rich with culture, food, and fun.
The event plays a crucial role in a neighborhood known for its challenges with gangs and violence. With concerns over immigration enforcement, the Fiesta aims to provide a sanctuary offering music, social services, and community spirit. Craig Chico, CEO of the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council and leader of the festival for over 15 years, emphasized the importance of showcasing the community’s beauty and resilience.
This annual event has roots dating back to 1940 with the Free Fair. For the past three years, it has been held on South Ashland Avenue. Participants like Zitlally Jimenez, now 26, have cherished this festival since childhood. She attended with her young son, continuing a family tradition.
For first-time visitor Sergio Garcia, 19, of Gage Park, the Fiesta offered an exciting mix of cultural experiences through diverse food, establishments, and attractions. Despite concerns, the presence of private security and police reassured attendees of their safety.
Throughout the past year, increased immigration enforcement canceled some Hispanic festivals, yet the Fiesta Back of the Yards persevered. Board member Phil Fuentes highlighted their commitment to maintaining the event, emphasizing creating a safe environment as their primary goal. Though immigration enforcement remains a concern, organizers like Chico stress the importance of living without fear and providing normalcy for the community.
Families and children continued to enjoy rides like the Tilt-A-Whirl, illustrating the event’s festive spirit. The Fiesta Back of the Yards remains a beacon of safe, joyful celebration, illustrating the enduring spirit of the neighborhood.
