The conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah, backed by Iran, showed signs of easing on Sunday. This development followed a directive from the Israeli government, instructing its military to limit operations to defensive actions only within Lebanon.
By late afternoon, there were no reported attacks by Israeli forces on Lebanon, nor any strikes by Hezbollah on Israeli territories. However, uncertainty remains regarding whether this directive, announced on Saturday night, will effectively address the tensions that led to deadly clashes on Friday and Saturday. These tensions threatened a preliminary peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
President Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Iran’s role in Lebanon through a social media post on Sunday. He urged Iran to immediately stop its proxies in Lebanon from causing disruptions. He warned of potential increased military action against Iran if the situation persists.
The situation in Lebanon has seen numerous cease-fires that have been declared, broken, and reinstated in recent weeks. Disputes persist over what constitutes defensive actions by Israeli forces.
Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, stated that there has never been a restriction on Israeli Defense Forces in Lebanon regarding neutralizing threats. The recent clashes concentrated around the region of Tebnit and the nearby Ali al-Taher, a strategic area overlooking Nabatieh city in southern Lebanon.
