On June 20, 2026, thousands of demonstrators convened in Tirana, Albania, advocating for governmental reforms. Initially focused on objecting to a multi-billion-dollar luxury resort initiative, the protests have grown into a larger movement against governmental corruption.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, head of the Socialist government, faces mounting criticism as citizens demand his resignation. Protestors accuse both Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha of perpetuating corruption throughout the thirty years following the end of the communist regime in 1991.
The controversy began with a resort development plan spearheaded by Jared Kushner and his associates via Affinity Partners. This project aims to establish two resort properties on Albania’s coastal lands, adding approximately 10,000 hotel rooms and villas. The proposed locations include the desolate Sazan Island and Zvërnec’s Vjosa-Narta protected landscape, inhabited by monk seals, flamingos, and sea turtle nesting grounds.
Agim Nesho, a former Albanian ambassador, clarified the protests to Fox News Digital, stressing that these are not against foreign investors like Kushner. Misunderstandings arose partly due to misinformation. Nesho noted that the investment would bring $4 billion into the country, creating jobs. He highlighted the revoked protected status of the land years ago by Rama’s administration and suggested the investors might prioritize environmental standards more than local business interests.
Nesho criticized Rama for stealing elections, including the previous year’s parliamentary vote, not recognized by the United States. Eric Czuleger, living in Albania for five years and documenting the protests, noted Rama’s dismissive initial response, labeling protesters as a marginal group. When numbers grew, international coverage forced domestic media to acknowledge the protests, which Rama then attributed to a ‘hybrid war’ by external forces like Iran and Russia.
The protests commenced in May. Despite this opposition and calls from EU Parliament to halt projects on protected lands, Rama continues backing the resort investments. The government clarified plans would undergo thorough Environmental Impact Assessments and defended property rights in a statement to Fox News Digital. Rama emphasized state ownership of Sazan Island and the private status of land in Zvërnec.
Reports emerged that online misinformation regarding the resort project might be fabricated or doctored. Asher Abehsera, head of Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, expressed commitment to sustainability and economic growth, envisioning a destination celebrating Albania’s natural beauty.
Despite ongoing protests, Albanians fear potential outcomes of Rama’s possible resignation. Czuleger voiced concerns about unchanged leadership possibly sustaining corruption while pondering adverse effects of a new regime. He stressed that only through persistent pressure and clear goals could real change occur.
Albanian actor Florjan Binaj characterized the protests as unprecedented since 1991, expressing his intent to support the movement. The protesters demand Rama’s resignation to make way for a new government.
Nesho highlighted Albania’s deep corruption issues under unaccountable governance, deeming Rama’s resignation vital along with early elections supervised by international monitors. The government did not directly address questions about protestor concerns.
