China has taken decisive action by imposing sanctions on 10 American companies linked to military operations. This decision comes in response to the U.S. restricting Chinese tech companies from engaging in defense contracts. The affected firms include those involved in military drone production and rare earth mining.
The Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that these sanctions would prevent the export of ‘dual-use’ items to these companies. ‘Dual-use’ items are goods that serve both military and non-military purposes. This move aims to safeguard China’s national security and counters the U.S. government’s claimed expansion of the ‘List of Chinese Military Companies.’
In a separate development, China’s Finance Ministry has banned government entities from purchasing products from 46 American companies. Among the companies affected are units of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and General Dynamics. No reason was provided for this prohibition.
Earlier in the month, the U.S. Defense Department expanded its list of firms allegedly linked to the Chinese military. It included tech giants like Alibaba and Baidu. Baidu has refuted these claims, describing the accusation as baseless. These companies are now ineligible for U.S. military contracts.
The Commerce Ministry highlighted that the American sanctions contradict the consensus reached between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump during a previous visit. Furthermore, China prohibits third countries from transferring dual-use items from China to the sanctioned firms, although Chinese companies can seek export approval for essential goods.
The American companies affected by China’s sanctions include AVEOX in California, Red Cat Holdings and Teal Drones in Utah, IMSAR in Utah, Jaia Robotics in Rhode Island, Ball Aerospace & Technologies in Colorado, Oshkosh Defense in Wisconsin, L3Harris Maritime Services in Virginia, MP Materials in Nevada, and USA Rare Earth in Oklahoma.
