New York Congressional Primaries: Progressive Candidates Challenge Establishment
New York’s congressional candidates have one last opportunity to sway voters before the primary election. A growing progressive movement is challenging traditional Democrats in key races. These contests are testing the influence of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, an emerging figure in the political landscape. He is supporting three House candidates, having campaigned vigorously, including hosting a rally with Senator Bernie Sanders.
Mamdani emphasized the need for a revitalized Democratic Party, stating, The party of the past will not be what leads us into the future. We need a Democratic Party with backbone.
In another significant race, Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, seeks to secure a congressional seat representing Manhattan. Schlossberg leverages his social media presence and family legacy but faces competition from Alex Bores and Micah Lasher, who both have established political backgrounds. Alex Bores, known for his AI regulation proposals that have sparked Silicon Valley’s interest, has launched an ad focused on the risks of artificial intelligence.
In contrast, Micah Lasher draws on his extensive experience in New York government, with backing from prominent Democratic figures. Additionally, attorney George Conway, known for his previous association and subsequent opposition to Trump, is also in the race.
As the election nears, Schlossberg held an event with David Letterman, and his mother, Caroline Kennedy, appeared in a campaign ad supporting him. Meanwhile, Bores continues to emphasize the influence of tech money against him.
Mamdani has chosen not to endorse a candidate in this particular race. His focus remains on three other contests, including ones involving sitting incumbents. Darializa Avila Chevalier, supported by Mamdani, is running against U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat, a history-making Dominican American representative from northern Manhattan and the Bronx. Espaillat has criticized Avila Chevalier for inflammatory posts from her past. She has since expressed regret for those posts.
Another contest involves Brad Lander, who received Mamdani’s backing in his challenge against U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander, seen celebrating the Knick’s NBA title, has linked himself to Mamdani’s political agenda. Goldman, focusing on his congressional achievements, did not support Mamdani’s mayoral bid.
Finally, Mamdani is endorsing Claire Valdez in her campaign against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez. Both candidates hold progressive views, but Valdez positions herself closely with Mamdani’s vision for broader national changes.
