Shooting Incident at San Jose National High School
In Tacloban city, Philippines, a tragic shooting occurred at San Jose National High School on Monday, June 22, 2026. Two young students opened fire, resulting in three deaths and seven injuries. These suspects, aged 14 and 15, have been detained. They were reportedly victims of bullying, though the details remain sparse.
The weapons used were a 9 mm pistol and a .38 caliber revolver. Access to these firearms was facilitated by security lapses at the school, where only a sole guard was present across multiple entrances. Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy, the regional police chief, highlighted the security issues and mentioned that the firearms were easily smuggled onto the campus.
The tragic event unfolded as the shooters went through two classrooms, causing panic. Many victims, predominantly female students, were caught in the violence. Over 40 shell casings were discovered by police amidst screams and chaos showcased in videos posted online.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has initiated a detailed investigation and stressed the need for heightened security at educational institutions and public spaces. The minors, due to their age, will be handed over to welfare officers post-investigation under Philippine law, which exempts those under 15 from criminal charges unless proven otherwise.
While firearm-related crimes are not uncommon in the Philippines, school shootings are rare. Comparable incidents include a 2022 shooting at a university in Manila, highlighting ongoing concerns around firearm access and security.
