The leader of a group of protesters, accused of being part of the far-left movement antifa, received a 100-year prison sentence on Tuesday. A jury found him and seven other demonstrators guilty of supporting terrorism. This verdict follows an armed assault last summer on an immigration facility in Alvarado, Texas.
The harsh sentence against Benjamin Song is one of several penalties issued in this case. These sentences were passed during separate hearings at the Federal District Court in Fort Worth. Two judges, Judge Mark T. Pittman and Judge Reed O’Connor, delivered strong rebukes to the defendants for using violence and attempting to undermine the democratic process during their protest.
In March, a total of nine young demonstrators, including Song, were found guilty. Their charges stemmed from the attack on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. A police officer was injured in the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck.
Of the six defendants found guilty alongside Song on terrorism charges, sentences ranged from 50 to 70 years. Another individual, convicted of lesser charges and absent from the protest, received a 30-year sentence. The final defendant’s sentencing remains pending, scheduled for the following month.
The extraordinary severity of these sentences was notably longer than any given to the over 1,500 rioters involved in the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. The longest sentence in that case was a 22-year term, received by Enrique Tarrio, leader of the far-right group Proud Boys.
The rulings in Fort Worth convey a strong message, particularly in Texas, indicating a tough stance against ICE protesters, especially those associated with antifa ideologies. Activists protesting against ICE have faced increased legal actions. Recently, 15 individuals connected to two antifa groups in Minnesota were indicted on charges of hindering federal agents during immigration operations over the winter.
