Europe is currently facing intense heat due to an early heat wave, affecting millions across the continent. This extreme weather is attributed to a phenomenon known as a heat dome.
Understanding Heat Domes
Heat domes are high-pressure systems that remain stationary and trap heat and humidity for days. Mireia Ginesta from the Climate Litigation Lab explains that these domes are caused by a northward bulge in the jet stream, a fast-moving wind current high above. When the air sinks, it compresses and increases pressure and temperature, leading to heat waves.
Heat Waves Explained
Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist, notes that the heat dome affects the jet stream, while the resulting heat wave impacts surface temperatures. Europe is currently experiencing severe heat, with countries like France, Italy, Spain, and the UK feeling the burn.
Impact on Europe
Millions are enduring high temperatures typically unfamiliar to them. France has been particularly affected, with half of the nation under a red heat wave alert. The country lacks widespread air conditioning, leading to fatalities from drowning as people seek water to cool off. Temperatures have soared to 104°F (40°C), breaking records.
Climate Change Influence
Experts assert that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heat domes. The global temperature shift makes extreme heat more probable, affecting numerous nations. Liz Bentley from the Royal Meteorological Society highlights this increased persistence and intensity.
Staying Safe in Extreme Heat
Authorities advise staying hydrated, avoiding exercise during peak heat, seeking shade, and finding access to cool water sources. In France, public events have been canceled and alcohol consumption restricted. Nighttime heat is a significant concern, as it prevents the body from cooling, impacting health.
