Texas A&M’s journey to the College Football Playoff during Mike Elko’s second season as head coach seemed a bit early. The Aggies had a significant victory with a 41-40 road win at Notre Dame in Week 2. Elko deserves credit for leading an undefeated regular season, but the team faced a relatively easy schedule in 2025 compared to the upcoming season’s challenges.
The Aggies faced a setback losing to Texas 27-17 in Austin on November 28, followed by a 10-3 defeat against Miami in the CFP’s first round.
For Elko and the team, the upcoming season focuses on mastering the ability to finish strong. With quarterback Marcel Reed returning for his second full season, the Aggies are positioned better for a playoff pursuit. Three crucial games will shape Texas A&M’s season.
Texas A&M at LSU (Sept. 26)
During a spring youth camp, Reed confidently stated he doesn’t lose to LSU. The Aggies decisively won 49-25 in Baton Rouge last season, marking the end of Brian Kelly’s time with the Tigers. This year, LSU will be under first-year head coach Lane Kiffin. September’s matchup will reveal how the Aggies measure up against top SEC teams. Texas A&M’s four offensive line transfers will face a revamped LSU defensive line.
Texas A&M at Alabama (Oct. 24)
Alabama won’t be guaranteed a spot in the CFP after losing quarterback Ty Simpson and much of their defensive front. The team struggles with a weak running game. Their success depends on the new quarterback, either Keelon Russell or Austin Mack. Despite uncertainties, Alabama remains a ranked team, and playing them on the road in Tuscaloosa will test Texas A&M.
Texas at Texas A&M (Nov. 27)
Just days after facing Oklahoma, Texas A&M will take on their rivals, Texas, in the regular season’s final game. Last season, the Longhorns upset the Aggies. Texas is set to field a stronger team when they meet in November. This match could be Elko’s last opportunity to make a lasting impression on the CFP selection committee.
