North Korea has taken a significant step in expanding its naval capabilities. The nation has commissioned its first naval destroyer, the Choe Hyon, which is equipped with nuclear-capable missiles, as announced by leader Kim Jong-un.
Kim Jong-un attended the commissioning ceremony held on Tuesday at Nampo port, located southwest of Pyongyang. This event marks a milestone in North Korea’s ambition to strengthen its naval forces beyond coastal operations.
The 5,000-ton Choe Hyon stands as the largest warship ever constructed by North Korea. It serves as a testament to Kim’s determined efforts to enhance and nuclearize his navy, a process that began with the vessel’s maiden test run in April of last year.
During his speech at the ceremony, Kim affirmed that the navy was entering “full-fledged service” with a clear focus on integrating nuclear weapons into its naval arsenal.
For many years, North Korea’s naval power has been overshadowed by both the South Korean navy and U.S. fleets active in the region. The majority of North Korean ships, originating from the Soviet era, have been primarily utilized for coastal patrols.
Kim’s navy expansion has also been accompanied by North Korea’s increasing support to Russia in the latter’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Analysts suggest that Russia may be aiding North Korea with oil and food supplies, along with technology and materials necessary for military upgrades. Observations by South Korean analysts have identified that recent missile tests from Choe Hyon incorporate Russian technology, including a supersonic cruise missile.
Historically, North Korea’s nuclear capabilities revolved around ballistic missiles, due to its lack of nuclear-capable aircraft or submarines. However, in recent years, Kim Jong-un has prioritized the nuclearization of his naval fleet. Efforts include testing submarine-launched ballistic missiles, revealing a nuclear-powered submarine, and developing unmanned underwater vehicles capable of deploying nuclear warheads.
